OUR MEETING LAST WEEK

There was a sense of excitement in the air with a new member in the wings and with newspaper reporters and TV cameras hovering around.  President Wayne looked rather excited himself as he convened the meeting.  There were the guests and a new member induction, and there were the awards and recognitions (see below).  Byron Henbest gave our prayer, and later introduced his guest, Ron McDole. Our old friend and honorary Kiwanian,  Rick Wilson also paid us a visit (see the related item below).  There was the exciting pledge to the flag led by Leah Eckley (you won’t let us get away with that, will you Leah?).  Mo Weldon thought it appropriate to select Kevin Laughlin as Kiwanian of the Week.  And Kristie Kennedy led an exciting rendition of “Smile.”  Announcements.  Some announcements are found elsewhere, but in this section we will tell you President Wayne told us that there will be a Girls, Inc Reverse Raffle, and tickets will be available in May.  He also reminded us that we are invited to the grand opening of Camp Courageous on April 19 with an RSVP needing to be sent by April 1.  This reminded him to remind us, he needs a new inter-club chair since our inter-club chair has resigned from Kiwanis.  YOU can help President Wayne as inter-club chair.  All you have to do, is tell him.  Happy Times  Don’t exclude Sergeant Steve from that list of excited, happy people.  He commended the presence of Tammy Oldham who he said has been absent for a few meetings. Steve then discussed with Secretary Greg the fashion show situation in Lexington during the Mid-Year Conference.  Steve is pretty good at finding gossip – wonder what he learned?  We think the club needs to see those pictures they discussed.  Steve made it clear how observant he is by noting the absence of a name badge on Slim Nash’s person. Hey Slim, without the badge we aren’t going to know who you are.  Steve also demonstrated how much arithmetic he learned (or didn’t learn) from Paul Manning’s math teaching wife when our sergeant couldn’t remember if she was his 4th or 5th grade teacher. Our sergeant did speak to Editor Don who had carefully listened last week (and wrote what he thought he heard).  He thought our esteemed Elvis gave that dollar last week to support those attending the convention in Miami (you sure that convention is in Orlando, Steve?).  Steve then closed with a story about the widow lady permitted to select three hymns, and so she selected him, and him, and him.  The Program.   Dr. Sue Fleschner described a mission trip to Nepal to help girls on the other side of the world through the Madhav Ghimire Foundation.  The foundation’s mission is to raise funds to assist children in rural Nepal.  Ninety percent of the funds donated go directly to the children’s education. Through their efforts scholarships are provided for girls selected on the basis of financial need, academic potential and performance.  Currently 60 children in six different villages are being supported and there are plans to increase that number in the future, expanding opportunities to many regions of the country.   Sue and her husband were in Nepal for two weeks working with children.

BB&T IS SPONSORING THE 11TH ANNUAL SOAP BOX DERBY

It has been 10 great years, and in each of those years, Rick Wilson and BB&T Bank supported Kiwanis in sponsoring the All-American Soap Box Derby by donating a total of $225,000.  And Rick said that for each of those years, his bank has done it for children.  He complimented Kiwanis in running a great race each year, saying that he looks forward to continuing this  relationship and support for many Soap Box years to come.  With those comments, Rick Wilson, on behalf of BB&T, presented Kiwanis with a check for $20,000.  We cannot tell you, Rick, how much we appreciate what you have done for the children and for Kiwanis as we, too, work to help those children.  It’s not thanks enough, but for now we will just say THANK YOU!!! and we promise you that your support is valued much more than we can ever say.

MID-YEAR FOLKS ARE BACK, TALKING BIG MONEY!

President Wayne gave a brief report on the attendance of our officers at the Mid-Year Conference in Lexington, February 22-23.  He said that he, Vice President Debbie, and Secretary Greg represented our club at this annual event.  President Wayne proudly repeated K-T District leaders’ praise for 2007 K-T Convention chair, Kevin Laughlin under whose leadership K-T, the leaders were pleased to say, turned a profit of $6,573.35. The K-T convention often does not make a profit. The delegates report that they attended several training sessions and were quite positive about them and about what they learned.  It is this kind of sacrifice of personal time that makes Kiwanis the distinguished club it has come to be down through the years.  Thanks, Wayne, Debbie, and Greg for making that sacrifice.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LEADERS

President Wayne just had more nice things to do and say last week.  Among other things, he presented awards to some of our Kiwanians whose leadership helped make 2006-2007 such a great year.  Don Meredith accepted the K-T Governor’s Reading for Diversity Award.  Cheryl Meredith played a prominent leadership role in that project but was unable to be present to accept the award last week.  Past President Brian Packard was awarded a special pin in recognition of his efforts as 2006-2007 Distinguished President Secretary Greg Seaton was also honored with a pin, and he was recognized as our 2006-2007 Distinguished Club Secretary.  Finally, we all received recognition in the form of a banner patch for being a 2006-2007 Distinguished Club.  Thanks to all whose efforts resulted in such a great year for the Kiwanis Club of Bowling Green.  Most of all, thanks to you, Brian, Greg, Don and Cheryl for your leadership that inspired the rest of us to help make this honor possible.

WELCOME TO KIWANIS, ELISE LIEB

Our newest member is Elise Lieb, sponsored and introduced by Rodney Veitschegger.  He said that she has been a friend of the Veitscheggers for several years, and she is Flora Stuart’s mother.  We are pleased that you have joined us, Elise, and we welcome you to our Kiwanis fellowship.
